PHILOSOPHY OF THE
PENNELLVILLE LEARNING CENTER

The purposes of the Pennellville Learning Center programs are to provide a quality education for students who are having difficulty meeting the requirements in a traditional school.  Pennellville Learning Center (PLC) offers a fresh start in a small learning community for students who may have been unhappy, have felt stigmatized by past actions or were generally not motivated by current offerings.

The programs provide a relevant education, while emphasizing the responsibilities that our society expects of young adults.

Students are encouraged to stay in school, become active learners in the program, master basic academic skills and develop a cooperative attitude necessary for healthy interpersonal relationships and employment success.  New chances to grow, to hope and to change are available here.

A sense of community and belonging exists at PLC because of the small number of students and staff members who act as advisors and develop trusting relationships with students and parents. Through frequent and timely feedback, we keep everyone informed about specific details of each student's social and academic progress.

To encourage ownership and community building, students help shape school policies.  Emphasis is placed on learning and modeling appropriate behavior and problem solving.

PASS

PASS, or the Phoenix Alternative Secondary School, is a program which services 9 - 12th graders to meet their high school educational needs.  The students who attend this program are typically at-risk of educational failure as indicated by poor grades, poor attendance, truancy, school anxiety, disruptive behavior or discipline reasons.  The program is limited in slots and students are often referred to this program by the guidance office/high school administration or by their own request.  Students are required to meet all the State Learning Standards and credits and pass all the Regents exams.

GED

The GED, or General Educational Development program, prepares students to test for their high school equivalency diplomas.  The program is designed as an in-school program for 16 - 18 year old students who have indicated a strong desire to withdraw from the conventional educational environment. An individual instruction program is designed for each student based on their entry ability in the test areas.  The program is limited to 15 students and emphasis is placed on the students continuing their education after successful completion of the 7.5 hour GED examination.  Speakers and career exploration are included to meet the workforce preparation component mandated by the State.  Referrals to this program typically come from the guidance office at JCB or from the Program Coordinator at PLC.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

The PLC staff seeks to partner with parents to guide their child's education.  Therefore, we do several things that help to keep the parents involved.  A meeting with parents is a regular step in the admissions process for both programs at PLC. Every two weeks a progress report is sent home for PASS students in addition to the 10 week report card. Parent/teacher conferences are held two times a year, and parents are encouraged at any time to call with questions or to arrange a meeting with staff members.  Telephone calls are made by the whole staff as a means to keep parents informed of problems and progress throughout the school year.
